The moving journey of our new lucky pig
Ferdinand recently joined our Fresopolis family -and his story is as extraordinary as it is touching. It is a perfect example of the fate of many farm animals on Mallorca and shows just how important heartfelt animal welfare and a loving home are.
From the farm to the animal shelter -and almost back to the slaughterhouse
Ferdinand’s life began on a Mallorcan farm. He was the last survivor of a small pig farm there when his owner -an elderly farmer -finally had to give him away. Ferdinand lived alone in an enclosure for a while, without regular food or water. His fate seemed sealed: he was to be slaughtered that same month. But then Rainer Lingelbach, a German tourist, discovered Ferdinand during a walk. He was immediately fascinated by the gentle boar and began to visit and care for him regularly. When he learnt of the imminent slaughter date, he spontaneously decided to buy Ferdinand free. Ferdinand changed hands for 200 euros -but that was just the beginning of the real odyssey.

A detour with obstacles
As Rainer had to return to Germany and had no experience with pigs, he desperately looked for a safe place for Ferdinand. After many unsuccessful enquiries to animal shelters and sanctuaries on Mallorca, a German animal rights activist finally took Ferdinand in. Yet even here his luck was short-lived: she lacked suitable accommodation and it soon became clear that she was also planning to slaughter Ferdinand if no long-term solution could be found.
Fresopolis – A new home for Ferdinand
Thanks to the support of dedicated animal rights activists and other animal lovers, Fresopolis was finally contacted. Here, Ferdinand finally found the animal-friendly, loving home he deserved. Ferdinand clearly feels at home in his new enclosure with his own little house. He enjoys the company of our other animals and the attention of visitors, who have quickly taken him to their hearts.

A symbol of hope and animal protection
Ferdinand’s story shows how important it is to give animals in need a voice… and a second chance. At Fresopolis, we work every day to give animals like Ferdinand a happy, animal-friendly life. Our visitors experience at first hand how much joy and gratitude there is in our rescue animals.
