– Immediate conversion, immediate benefits, climate protection
In a single step, the EU could convert up to 98.1 million hectares of arable land to no-till, bind 137 million tonnes of CO₂ per year in the long term, and secure higher incomes for farmers – all without bureaucracy or investment costs.
Why no-till is now indispensable:
• Climate protection: No-till conservatively binds 1.4 t CO₂ per hectare per year. On 98.1 million ha, that’s 137 million t CO₂/year – equivalent to the annual emissions of 30 million cars.
• Resource efficiency: 75% less diesel used (from 64 l to 16 l/ha) saves €116/ha. 58% less working time saves €56/ha. Total savings: €252/ha.
• Soil fertility: Increased humus improves water retention and raises yields by 5–10% long-term.
| Step | Action & Value |
| 1 | No-till cultivation – sequestration: 1.4 t CO₂/ha∙yr |
| 2 | Certificate barter – 1.4 t × €72/t = €100.8/ha∙yr CO₂ certificates to contractors |
| 3 | Machine rental – Drill €25/ha + Harrow €15/ha → €40/ha∙yr |
| 4 | Net payment – €100.8 certificates + €60.8 surplus (cash or reinvested) |
| 5 | Zero bureaucracy – one-click app for GPS monitoring, CRCF-compliant barter contracts, 5-year commitment with 10% buffer |
EU-wide impact at a glance
| Indicator | Per ha∙yr | EU Total (98.1 M ha) |
| CO₂ sequestration | 1.4 t | 137.3 M t CO₂/yr |
| Certificate revenue (€72/t) | €100.8 | €9,891 M |
| Machinery cost | €40 | €3,924 M |
| Contractors’ net surplus | €60.8 | €5,967 M |
Everyone wins:
Farmers
- Free use of state-of-the-art no-till machinery
- Immediate savings of €252/ha through diesel and labour efficiency
- Long-term yield gains and soil protection
Contractors
- Reliable payment: €100.8/ha in certificates + €60.8/ha surplus
- Predictable utilization and increased revenue
EU & industry - Unified, transparent CO₂ certificate management
- Climate target achievement: 137 M t CO₂ bound annually
Environment
- Prevents soil erosion, maintains biodiversity
- Enhances water retention and drought resilience
Calls to action:
- European Commission
– Enshrine the barter model via delegated regulation
– Provide one-click platform and financing - Machinery parks & contractors
– Draft framework contracts with CO₂ barter clauses
– Integrate digital GPS verification - Farmer associations
– Organize group applications and training
– Coordinate pilot projects for immediate scaling
With this initiative, no-till will finally become the EU standard:
“98 M ha climate-friendly cultivation, 137 M t CO₂ sequestered, and higher incomes – with no risk, no bureaucracy, and maximum benefit for climate and agriculture.”
Let’s make no-till the next great success – now!
